My new kite school

It's been a while... as usual.

I have finally made the step and opened up my own kite school together wt Kathrin.
After i have spend over 5 season on an island called Boracay i had to step away from it.
I had a very good time there, especially the first few years when the kite beach was not so crowded and Hey Jude was still running. I think the end of the most famous bar on the island "Hey Jude" marked the point where the island got lost to corruption, selfish business owners and way to many tourists.
During the last two season it just got too crowded, noisy and especially the Bulabog water got so much pollution that it is not really a kiters dream anymore. Infected wt salmonella / typhus and officially called "not fit for human activity" it's just gone over the top.

So now i have opened up my own school on a surfer's island called Siargao. It is surely an island on the way up. It is well known to surfers, as it has the most famous Filipino wave Cloud 9.
The kitecenter is called Kitesurf Siargao. We offer courses for all levels, from beginners to pro wave riding lesson. 1 on 1 tuition or advanced courses as well as trips to the neighbouring islands, downwinders, mangrove trips and many other thing to explore around the island.

Our center is equipped wt brand new Cabrinha and NP gear. We use the latest 2015 Cabrinha Radar kites for teaching.

Check it out!!!

Cook Islands - Rarotonga a paradise of Polynesia

Kia Orana…
I arrived in rarotonga after a short journey from Sydeny. It was my longest Saturday, I started on Saturday at 9PM in Sydney and landed in Rarotonga at 7AM… Saturday morning. That’s because the cook islands are just behind the date line.
The international airport is big for a small island but it still keeps it’s island living touch. From the big bustling city’s of Australia back into the island live time was a bit of a change but I really prefer it. Everything is goin at a slower pace, there is no stress and people are happy and very welcoming and after all it was warm again, jandals time. That’s how they call flip flops or thongs over here.

After a short nap I met up wt Paka, the main organizer for the competition. We went straight to the local market in town, it is a very colorful and busy one. They sell different kinds of local food, fruits and veggies here as well as the Polynesian style gifts to bring home like traditional wood masks, black pearls, sarongs...

It didin’t take me long to adjust to the island style again, and I met all the local kitesurfers down in Muri beach. Rarotonga is a round, volcanic island wt a reef all around it, at some spots it is very close to the beach and on other spots the reef is up to 800m outside the beach and inside are flatwater lagoons some wt sandy bottoms and others wt coral heads spread out.
Muri beach is one of the places wt the lagoon inside the reef, two small islands are right in front of the beach which can create wind shadows. So the wind here is very dependent on the direction. I had a good session here, the visibility of the water is crystal clear, so u can enjoy just cruising around.
Another spot is just 10minute drive away, but the wind comes from the other direction since it is around the corner from muri. This spot is close to the Rarotongan resort and it has a lot of coral heads inside the lagoon, so not really good for learning new tricks but nice to ride.

I spent the first nights in a hotel and then changed over to Conrads place, which is Muri Hillside. It is located uphill of the kiteschool on muri beach. From here u have a fantastic view over the bay. Conrad has a lovely family wt 4kidds, the family bond on the island is much bigger than I’ve seen it in any city or island before. The kids know how to behave, are very helpful in and around the house.

We had a lot of good dinner at his house and in all different kinds of restaurants on the islands.
The best food I had here was at a place called island living. It’s not the usual restaurant place, it is more like a plantation wt a big family house where the cook only once a week for a group of max. 15-20people. I was lucky enough to get a invitation from the minister. The food is absolutely free of any kind of conservation crap. Everything is fresh out of the garden and the sea. The whole idea behind this planation is to preserve the plants, fruits and vegetables that are growing in the Cook islands. There are many different kinds of limes and lemons, papayas, kaffir lime, mango trees and various types of local potatoes and roots.

The buffet meal is just the best that the island has to offer, a few food travel magazines just discovered it and gave em their highest notes.

I met wt a lot of people which are involved in the sailing federation of the Cook islands and in the OSF. It was actually very interesting to talk wt them and find out that the OSF and the Cook islands are far ahead of most other countrys, the kitesurfing is included in the sailing federation and they will start a school project together wt New Zealand that will be held in Aitutaki. Students can study the history of transportation and sailing of the Polynesian islands, this will give em official points towards the final exams. The course will then also include kitesurfing.
This is definitely a step I the right direction, the ISAF is just to big, old and slow of an organization to keep up wt these kind of things, so it is very good to have people here that are actually taking action and not just talk about it.

Sunset cruise wt the boys

It has been an amazing weekend wt the boys. Good fun on the water, party hard at night and yummie dinners, spare ribs and US beef @Valhalla Resto, Bavarian night @Boracay Kiteresort and Alchemy.

To end the weekend we had a sunset cruise wt the SiriYa catamaran, beside the boys there were also most of the girls from the Susi Mai girls camp aboard, so it got pretty crowded, but we still enjoyed the sail along white beach.

Gökova, Didim and some bruised ribs

I’m still in Turkey, enjoying the good steady wind every day. Only too bad I can’t ride at the moment…
Last Thursday we went to Didim, the flat water lagoon spot I visited last year already… and it still is one of the best lagoon spots in Europe. The Forecast was strong, as we arrived we found about 25-30knots steady winds with only little gusts. So we pumped everything we had in between 5m and 9m kites. I first tested the new 5m Vector kite from Cabrinha, actually the SE edition for schools. I haven’t been using such a small kite in a while and was surprised how fast it was turning. After the first turn I could not resist to loop it.. and booom it really pulled me of the water.. I like…
We took a lot of turns on all different kites, we had some beginners wt us that were enjoying the shallowness of the spot, as every time u crash u can get back on the board in an instant. Very easy to learn ur first backrolls or unhooked trick.. well maybe the wind was a bit strong for unhooked (-;
So during my 3rd session in decided to take the 5m out again for an extended ride and some more loops… as the tide went lower the water was maybe about 30cm deep by that time. On one of the loops I went high and looped it just before reaching the zenith, the kite went for a big loop and stopped on the way back up… lot of things going thru ur mind in this moment… specially how high I am and how shallow the water is down below. So the kite pulled me straight forward instead of supporting my landing and BANG... it hit the water hard, Sedat told me later that I actually bounced of the water twice before I stock. Back on the board I figured that my rib was actually hurting a bit so I decided better goin back to the beach… and I figured the my rib was either cracked or broken… but I think it was not enough pain to be broken.
Now a few days later it’s getting better from day to day and I’m hopefully back on the water tomorrow… wt a seat harness and raceboard, heading out to discover the Gökova bay…
I also had a chance to test the new Switchblades, the 10 and 12m kites are lighter on the bar this year but yet powerfull kites. I would say the 12m is still like most others 14m kites, so a 75kg rider u doesn’t really need anything bigger than 12mSB. It’s fast, very stable and perfect for wakestyle.
Looking forward to get my hands on the new Nomads as well.

The bay here was very busy during the weekend, on and off the water, haven’t seen so many kite on this beach before. The kiteacademytr.com is doing a great job here wt the Cabrinha kites, as last year I haven’t seen much Cabrinhas and this season they are already all over the place. The guests are mostly Turkish kiters from bigger cities around here, but I’ve already seen the first Germans here as well... so u better be quick or they will be all over the place haha.
We had some good nights out wt all the guys, the party is usually in the small KA Bar where all the kitesurfers meet up for drinks on weekends. Since I life wt Mert and Yalgiz we have some after parties at our home… nice pool outside and it is now also filled wt water again.
We had some break in this weekend while we were all asleep… but the did not take anything as none of the guys had any money in their wallets. We found the bags and cloth outside the house on the veranda in the morning, all wallets searched.. but they left all the credit cards, laptops, phones… guess they were only looking for money, but since I’m on the top floor they did not come up to my room… lucky me. First we thought that someone might have been sleepwalking or was looking for cigarettes as nothing was missing... but we figured out the following day that five houses around were robbed.

I really like all the delicious food here like Köfte, Kebap, Iskender and soo much bred and I get used to drink the Ayran, the Turkish salty milk kinda thing that they drink wt all the meat dishes.
so long…

Korea, Kite, Cold, Kimchee

Welcome to Korea

what can i say about Korea... first of all, nothing because i don't understand a single word and i can't read the signs, all i can say is kimchee... and that is one of the best dishes u can get in Korea, it comes with every meal..

So after my journey from Boracay 35°C to Busan 5°C i was lost at the airport. The pickup didn't work outand i had no contact nr, but lucky i had the Hotel adress... which is actually a Motel... that's the ones with dildos and porn movies in the corrido ((-: but hey it's clean and close to the Kitebeach.

So my first taxi driver had no clue where i wanted to go, even if i showed him the adress of my Motel, so he drove me around for half an hour till i told em to stopp and changed the taxi. The next taxi told me that i'm in comletly the wrong place, so i drove another half hour wt this taxi till i finally arrived. Was a bit strange to check into the Motel, but i was tired and fell asleep very quick.

So next morning first thing was get some food, which can be a very funny part if all menu cards are written in Korean, but lucky as i am there were 3pictures on the wall, so i just pointet out one of them and got lucky wt a noodle soupe and kimchee... So next step was to find an internet connection to tell Mr. Kim that i arrived last night and he missed to pick me up, so by midday he found me in the hotel.

I made a visit to the kitebeach, which is pretty large and shallow. perfect for freestyle - don't bring a race board, it' not deep enough (-: My first contact wt the water was shooockinggg cold... it's maybe 10-15°C so i will only judge this competition but for sure not touching the water.
So a the day passed by the we went for another Korean dinner wt at least 15 dishes on the table and to digest all of that healty food we went for some screen golf. It's a very funny way of playing indoor golf, the big difference is that u hit the ball towards a screen and not the open field.
After a short visit to a bar it was already bedtime, oh by the way.. i got a round bed...

So this morning also Yo arrived here, in shorts... first thing Korean breakfast.. kimchee and lot's of other stuff.. yummmie
and the story will continue hopefully wt some wind and a successful event.
pics will follow soon
